The God Who Is

A Three Voices Rendering

I. God Is Not in Time—Time Is in God

We experience reality sequentially.

Before.

After.

Memory.

Expectation.

Everything we know is arranged along a line we call time. We remember what has been. We anticipate what will be. And we struggle to inhabit what is.

But God does not occupy a place on that line. When God names Himself in Book of Exodus 3:14—

“I AM WHO I AM”—

He is not giving Moses a poetic phrase. He is revealing a metaphysical truth.

God is not one who was.

God is not one who will be.

God is.

Not in the sense of a moment, but in the sense of fullness.

He does not move from past to future. He is equally, fully present to all that we call past, present, and future.

What we experience as sequence, He holds as entirety.

Time does not contain Him.

He contains time.

This is why the language of Scripture sometimes stretches beyond grammar.

Before Abraham was, “I AM.” — Gospel of John 8:58

Not “I was.” Not “I came to be.” I AM.

God does not become. He does not develop. He does not improve or decline. He is not waiting for anything. He is the ground of being, itself—unchanging, unbounded, fully actual.

For us, time is a necessity. Without it, we could not think, choose, grow, or endure.

For God, time is not a necessity. It is a creation.

And yet—The One who stands outside time enters it. Not because He must, but because He wills. And in doing so, the eternal meets the moment.

II. Meeting the God Who Is

Lord,

I do not live where You are.

I live in what was—replaying words, revisiting failures, trying to rewrite what cannot be undone.

Or I live in what might be—imagining outcomes, anticipating loss, trying to control what has not yet arrived.

Rarely do I live here.

But You—You are always here.

Not trapped in the moment, but fully present to it.

You are not waiting for me to improve before You meet me.

You are not standing ahead of me, arms crossed, watching me catch up.

You are here. And You keep saying: I AM.

Not “I will be when you get it right.”

Not “I was before you failed.”

I AM.

So meet Me.

Here—in the unfinished place, in the uncertain place, in the place where you are not enough.

Because I am.

Teach me to stop chasing You through time.

Teach me to stop hiding from You in memory.

Let me find You where You have always been—

Here.

Amen.

III. The Place Where Time Breaks

There is a place

where clocks lose their authority.

Not because time has stopped—

but because it no longer rules.

A place where the past does not accuse,

and the future does not threaten.

Where regret loosens its grip,

and fear forgets your name.

You arrive there without traveling.

No distance crossed.

No moment passed.

Only awareness.

And suddenly—

You are no longer reaching backward.

You are no longer leaning forward.

You are held.

Not by memory.

Not by possibility.

But by Presence.

A Presence that does not flicker.

Does not age.

Does not wait.

A Presence that does not say,

“I was with you,”

or “I will be with you.”

But simply—

I AM.

And in that place,

you realize something you had missed your entire life:

God was never moving toward you.

He was never away.

You were the one

moving through shadows of time—

past Him,

ahead of Him,

around Him.

And all along,

He was here.

Coda

You do not need to find God in your past.

You do not need to secure Him in your future.

You need only stop—

and meet Him

where He has never not been.
